Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Institute Materials Sciences (VAST-IMS)

Institute Materials Sciences (Vietnam): VAST, is the leading scientific and technological agency in Vietnam; it plays an important role in the national scientific and technological systems, and conducts basic research in the natural sciences as well as highstandard technological development. VAST consists of 30 National Institutes (including ICT & IMS), 7 Nonacademic Units, 9 State-owned companies, over 20 production unions and 35 Units of Institutes. In total VAST has ~2500 staffs among them 700 hold PhD degree and 250 Profs/Assoc Profs. IMS’ role within VAST is to investigate problems in the field of materials science and technology and to collaborate with international research institutions/universities and to transfer advanced technologies in materials science from abroad to Vietnam. It also provides post-graduate education/training in materials science. IMS has 223 permanent staff including 23 Professors/Assoc Profs and 70 PhD working in 26 laboratories organised in 5 specialised divisions. It is currently actively engaged in research in the areas of: Nano-materials and nanotechnology; Optical materials and technologies; Electronic materials and devices; Rare elements and rare earth materials; Composite materials and polymers; Metals, alloys and corrosion prevention; Mineral processing and environmental technologies. IMS is the local organizer of many National and International Workshops/Conferences. Currently IMS is organizing the Sixth International Workshop on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology (IWAMSN2012) which will be held on Oct 30-Nov 2, 2012 in Halong Bay city.
